Ask what a concrete driveway costs in Dallas-Fort Worth and you'll get wildly different answers. Published 2026 estimates put plain gray concrete somewhere between $5 and $8 a square foot, with decorative finishes climbing to $21. HomeGuide lands on $6 to $15. Local DFW contractors publishing their own numbers tend to quote $8 to $14 for a standard 4-inch, 3,500 PSI pour. All of those are defensible, and none of them tell you what your driveway costs.
The spread isn't contractors being cagey. It's that a driveway isn't one product. Two quotes on the same house can differ by thousands and both be fair, because they're describing different work. Here's what actually moves the number.
Thickness and reinforcement. A 4-inch slab is standard for passenger cars. Park a dually, an RV, or a work trailer on it and you want 5 or 6 inches, which is a straight 25 to 50 percent jump in material before anything else changes. Reinforcement matters just as much: fiber mesh is cheapest, welded wire is a step up, and #3 or #4 rebar on chairs at 18 inches on center is the real answer for North Texas clay. A quote that doesn't specify reinforcement is hiding its cheapest option.
Tear-out and haul-off. Removing and disposing of an existing slab is real labor and real dump fees, and it's frequently the single biggest line item difference between two bids. Watch for anyone proposing to pour over your existing driveway. It's faster and cheaper and it will fail, because you've now got an unbonded layer sitting on a surface that was already moving.
Base preparation. This is the line item nobody wants to pay for and the one that determines whether your driveway lasts eight years or thirty. Proper prep means excavating to grade, removing organic material, and compacting the subgrade, often with a few inches of crushed base. In DFW's expansive clay this isn't optional. It's the whole ballgame.
Site access. If a truck can back up to the pour, you save money. If the crew has to wheelbarrow or pump concrete around a house, over a fence line, or down a long approach, labor climbs fast. Corner lots and tight urban infill in places like Oak Cliff or older Irving neighborhoods routinely cost more than a wide-open Midlothian build.
Finish. A broom finish is the workhorse and the cheapest. Exposed aggregate, stamped patterns, saw-cut scoring, integral color, and stained finishes all add material and skilled labor. Decorative work is where that $21 top end comes from.
Approach and apron work. The section between your property line and the street is often governed by city standards rather than your preference, and may require its own permit and inspection. If your job touches the approach, that's separate scope with separate rules.
How to read competing quotes. The useful move is not picking the lowest number, it's making the bids comparable. Ask every contractor for the same five things in writing: slab thickness in inches, PSI of the mix, reinforcement type and spacing, whether tear-out and haul-off are included, and what base prep is being done. If one bid is thousands cheaper, one of those five is almost always different. Once you have them side by side, the cheap bid usually explains itself.
Two more things worth asking. Who pulls the permit, and what's the control joint plan? Concrete shrinks as it cures, and it will crack. Saw-cut control joints at the right spacing decide whether those cracks land in a clean planned line or across the middle of your slab. A contractor who can answer the joint question without hesitating has poured a lot of driveways.
